I am sole care giver of my father. Does anyone know how or if there is funding to assist when I have to quit to care for him full time?

I work full-time, but this weekend we had a turning point. He is no longer able to walk. I have to consider the possibility of quitting my job to care for him full time. I cannot afford home aides even with the help of Medicaid. But I have bills, so just cannot quit with no income. I also have a heart problem atrial fibrillation. My Employer does not offer any family leave, however I have paid into temp disability. How do I go about getting a temp disability release?


I am so scared, frustrated and simply, just drained.

Don’t quit your job. How will you plan for your future?

Start looking into skilled nursing homes for your dad. Start by speaking to his doctor’s office. They can put you in touch with a social worker that can walk you through the process.

Temporary disability doesn’t cover something like this. You can’t use your temporary disability until YOU yourself are disabled and cannot work. It’s not something you pay in to so that you Can get paid to take care of a family member. It’s meant to replace some of your lost wages when you cannot work due to disability. You will need to find long term care for your dad. If you leave your job, you will lose your income, all your benefits and you won’t be contributing to social security or a retirement plan. Basically if you leave your job, you are giving up your own livelihood and impacting your future! If your dad is very low income and qualifies for Medicaid & home care than you could possibly be hisnpais caregiver but again you won’t gave any benefits or retirement contribution and you will NOT be paid to care for him full time.

You need to get him into a SNF. I do not believe there is another viable option. I was in the same situation as you, I went through it, there was no other way.

I know of no 'aid' available for people who quit their jobs to become full time care givers to their parents. I suggest you keep your job so you will have retirement benefits, and get your father into Skilled Nursing on Medicaid. He will be cared for 24/7 by a team of people, you will get to keep your income, and everything will work out for the best. You can still care for him by going to visit as often as you like.
Get the ball rolling if you haven't already.

It is possible to have medicaid pay family members to be caregivers. This is oppose to paying a company like a NH or agency to supply caregivers. While not the default, not common nor easy, it is in the rules and thus possible. Personally, I don't see why medicaid isn't pushing this more. It would be far cheaper for them to pay a family member $20-$30K a year to provide care than a NH $60K. I think one reason they don't is that they are afraid of abuse of the system. They can manage that like the court manages a lot of things like conservatorship. Have basic safeguards in place.
