Hospital stay and decline. Is it disease progression?

My dad has been in the hospital for about two weeks. He was walking well, eating, and trying to talk when he went in. He was admitted for UTI and has really declined. The nurse said it is due to just being in the hospital but I wonder if it is disease progression.

The elderly ALWAYS seem to decline in the hospital, that's for sure. If your dad has dementia/Alzheimer's, he could have taken another step down if you're witnessing a decline in his cognitive function. Or even a decline in being able to perform ADLs as easily as he once did. It's hard to say.

Give him a month to see if things improve. If not, consult with his PCP again to see what may be going on.

Best of luck!

Hi SWise. My friends Dad was admitted for UTI as well which was caused by a kidney stone. Infection went to his brain and he was hallucinating, incontinent, not eating or walking or communicating. He spent two weeks in the hospital and a week in rehab. Finally discharged and all symptoms has since resolved. UTI can wreak real havoc. I hope your Dad improves.

What disease does your Dad have? He is not in hospital at this point for a UTI as that would already be treated even if it needed antibiotics. Who is his health care POA and what do the doctors say? Hospitals are dangerous places for the elderly, loaded with germs no matter the care taken. How old is your Dad?

He is 70 years old with Alzheimers. The first week he was waiting in the emergency room for a Geri-psych bed and around day seven he became deathly ill and was admitted to a regular hospital bed. They found he had a uti and he just finished his antibiotics but has not been medically stable. Today he seemed somewhat better but still nowhere near his previous condition. He also has nowhere to go because he was discharged from his last facility for hitting someone. So now we are in that process as well.
