Are pets allowed?

NeedHelpWithMom Oct 2019
Usedup,

The facilities here don’t do it that way. I wouldn’t like that either.

The animals are in the main lobby area. If a person chooses to visit with the animals that are invited to do so. If they aren’t fond of animals they don’t have to. Personal choice as it should be.

I’m on the opposite side. I don’t think pets should be allowed. My MIL’s AL allows pets. We did not know this until after she moved in. We have a sign on her door to not bring animals into her room. The visits have continued by the people who walk dogs room to room. Nursing staff have told visitors she does not want visits. She does not like animals nor do the majority of her family for a variety of reasons. We have found a facility that does not allow animals of any kind at any time. We’re moving her next week.

They do have volunteers who bring animals to visit. That’s really sweet. I always wanted to do that with my dog but I was too busy to get away. Then he died but he would have made a wonderful visitor at a facility. He was so sweet and gentle.

No one here can tell got if pets are allowed because a)you forgot to tell us WHERE and b)rules, regulations and laws vary from state to state, facility to facility.

And some nursing homes DO ALLOW PETS.

Pets maybe allowed in Assisted Livings but only if the person can take care of them. This is not the staffs job.

Long Term Care/Nursing homes do not allow animals. By the time you r at that point, there is no way you can care for one. Family members may be able to bring one in for a visit but that would need to be OKd by Administration.

Service dogs maybe an exception. But a certified service dog is trained for all situations and knows how to conduct its self. It stays near it owner. Does not jump on other people or lick them.

Joann are you speaking specifically about nursing homes you’ve been to? Or in NJ? Because nursing homes do allow residents to have pets. Maybe not in NJ but the OP didn’t ask about NJ nursing homes.
