How to afford memory care facility?

My friend's husband has early Alzheimer’s. He’s 62. He soon will need to be in a facility. He’s getting combative. He has a pension and gets disability. But she has no real income right now. She doesn’t know how she will afford it. Can anyone offer some insight?

She needs to meet with a Medicaid specialist to ensure that her husband's income is structured to get him on Long Term Medicaid AND she is left with enough of his income to survive on her own. She will also need to meet with her local Social Service office so they can set her up with the help she will need as the portion of his income she will receive may not be enough for her to pay the bills. Some of his income will go to the Nursing Home, but she is entitled to some as well. Answering your response below, yes his income can be structured to get on Long Term Medicaid. An elder law attorney can do it for him and her. He will need Long Term Medicaid as his income is not enough to cover the cost of long term care alone.

Check if you can do a Miiker Trust or Qualified Income Trust in your state.

She REALLY needs to go see a CERTIFIED eldercare attorney to get good advice.

Memory Care is also considered a medical need and is tax deductible.

He will have to have government paid care thru Medicaid if he is eligible.

She should call the local Medicaid office and discuss applying for Medicaid for him. She should ask specifically about Spousal Impoverishment regulations. This means they cannot take all of his income to pay for his care and leave her with nothing to live on. In my state (amounts may vary state to state), the community spouse (your friend)is entitled to a monthly income of $2,350.00. If her income is (for instance) $350.00 per month, and his is $3000.00, she would the be entitled to keep $2000.00 of his income to live on. The other $1000.00 of his income would go to the nursing home and Medicaid would pay the difference. She is also able to keep her home and one vehicle.

with a pension from the fire department he will earn too much for Medicaid. What happens if you can’t afford a facility? Does Medicare cover it at all? Or would you quaLify for Medicaid because your health care cost are so high. I don’t quite understand. Say he gets 5000 a month pension. I forgot, he can’t get social security. And she gets 1000 a month ss. She can get 1500 out of his pension which leaves 3500 for him. Is that enough to pay for memory care in a nursing home?
