My 57 year old mom has complained of bugs inside her skin for at least 2 years now. What could this possibly be?

I dont think she is crazy because I have seen the welts after she claims the bug bit her. Her skin has completely changed. It does look like holes where something has dug into her skin. She pulls white threadlike pieces out of her skin and I am a witness these threads wiggle, they move on their own. She has hundreds of pieces of tape with what she gets off of her even out of her nose and she keeps it in hopes she will find a doctor to help her. Has anyone else ever seen anything like this?

Could it be scabbies. They burrow under the skin and seem hard to diagnose. My daughter had a patient that told her she had been complaining about itching for months, had even been in the hospital. Tests show it was scabbies and she was quarantined. They are contagious. I would get her to a Dr. now.

Has she seen a dermatologist or even her regular doctor? If not I would make an appointment immediately or even take her to the ER. Take the used tape with you as supporting evidence that this is not all in her head.

This is not as uncommon as you might think. Go to google and you will find several skin conditions that mimic all of this.
Take your Mom to a dermatologist; hope she finds relief.
