I am looking for assisted living that bases their fees on a sliding scale. Any suggestions?

Only income is SSI.

Looking at your profile, your husband is disabled with multiple issues. Have you spoken to your doctor about your growing inability to care for him safely at home? It does sound like he may need more care, and Medicaid (or Medi-cal in California) may be needed to get him into a long term facility, not assisted living.

California doesn’t have any income based assisted living. There is senior housing that is income based (and in short supply so there are usually waitlists) but it’s independent living. Last I heard there was still a waitlist for a medi-cal waiver, and unfortunately the waiver only pays some of the cost of assisted living.

Your best bet is to contact the Sacramento county department of social services and the area on aging to see what kind of assistance you are eligible for.

emscnevins, I also haven't heard about assisted living based on one's income.

The cost of running an assisted living facility is extremely expensive, thus they need to charge everyone a similar fee to keep the facility running. There is the cost-per-patient expense, thus they need income coming in to balance the cost.

Once in a while you may find an Assisted Living that will take Medicaid [which is different from Medicare] but the facility would have only a certain number of beds available. Depending on the State medical program, some State can offer a "wavier" which will help pay for a certain percentage of the cost, with the patient paying the rest out of pocket.

Medicaid will pay for room/board and care in a Nursing Home if a patient qualifies for Medicaid.

I have never heard of an AL that does scale. Where I live it cost over 5k a month. Memory care associated with it over 7k. They are privately owned.

I’ve never heard of that sort of facility but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. You can contact your local Area Agency on Aging. They may know of someplace like this. The only residence I’ve heard of are the low-income apartments that charge 30% of the person’s income as rent. Have you considered applying for Medicaid?
