Does adding lateral support to a wheelchair prevent leaning sideways?

My LO started leaning quite badly to one side and I began research to find her help. Her neck has to be in pain. Therapists were not much help, so, I looked online. THEN, I read that while sometimes leaning to the side CAN be a part of the progression of dementia, IT CAN ALSO BE A RESULT OF MEDICATION, specially, those for seizures, anxiety, depression, etc. I asked her doctor about it and he adjusted her medication......VERY SOON, her leaning went away. It was like a miracle. I'd check on that just to make sure that it's not a med. Good luck with your situation.

Today, I called 3 local suppliers, only one had lateral supports for a wheelchair, but the rep was busy and they took my number. None had supports for a Geri chair... I feel like I’m pulling teeth! I also called Medicare twice today and 4 medical offices trying to find a new primary care doctor who comes to the house. Yesterday I called 10 places. No luck so far. It makes me so stressed.

Thanks everyone. It’s frustrating. The OT who came knew nothing about wheelchairs. The one we have was purchased out of pocket because of the urgency of needing it.

Yes my Mom has one lateral support in her wheelchair. It’s basically a large “L” that’s padded. Its probably about 18” tall and can be used either upright or on its side and she is much more stable in her chair. She doesn’t realize it’s there so it’s not as intrusive as a pillow.

Ask for an OT to give you some advice, be sure to get someone who is experienced in fitting wheelchairs. It sounds like the chair you have is pretty basic, ask if the price of a better chair may be covered.

Was the wheelchair provided through insurance and can you contact the provider of it? We've had the provider of my dad's wheelchair out to the house a few times to adjust things and troubleshoot problems.

My dad's power wheelchair does have lateral supports, as well as a chest strap (which he doesn't like to use anymore now that he has a bit more core strength).
