Mom is in a nursing home on Hospice with a trach. Mom pulled trach out and now needs additional care in the nursing home, but we can' afford it. Any advice?

We have to pay and without the 24/7 1 on 1 care my mom can't stay, but we can't afford it.

Have you talked to the DON (Director of Nurses) in your mom's nursing home? If not, schedule an appointment and ask her what she recommends.

Also, is there a social worker connected with the nursing home? Ask to speak to her.

How about the ombudsman? The NH will have their number. [An ombudsman (or public advocate) is an official who is charged with representing the interests of the public by investigating and addressing complaints of maladministration or a violation of rights.] Call him/her right away and explain the situation.

Does your mom have Medicaid? Have you called them? Ask for their recommendation.

For the time being, can you gather family, friends, neighbors, church friends, etc. to stay with her until you can work this out?

They can't throw her out on the street. So, they should work with you to find other facilities that can accommodate her.

Good luck and God bless you and your mom.

Find out who the Social Worker is in your mom’s facility and speak with them. They will know what to do and how to apply for aid.
