My mom used to sometimes sleep with her eyes open (maybe she still does but since she is in the nursing home I'm not around her as much), more at half mast than wide open though. I always thought mom's macular degeneration played a roll in this, does she have vision loss too? I just gently closed them with the palm of my hand.
