How expensive are the medications given in a nursing facility?

Is a $1,500.00 a month medicine bill the norm? This is the 1st medicine bill. Mama is in a skilled nursing home after strokes and is legally blind. Gets around very well in wheelchair, only has high blood pressure and high colestrol.

This does sound high. What did she use before the nursing home for her prescriptions? She paid out of pocket? I am assuming she is private pay. You may want to ask the nursing home If they can recommend a low cost plan. Unless Medigap maybe supplimental has a plan.

These are generics.

Some medications are incredibly expensive. for example I take Eliqis (a blood thinner) and the retail price is around $400 a month, You just need a couple like that and if the NH adds on for giving them I can see a bill that high. Definitely ask for an itemized bill. You can look up the cost of any medication on the Internet.

To me that's an astronomical cost for medicine. It might be that her med list was changed and a lot added. It's a good idea to ask for a list of the meds that the facility is giving her; some of them may be unnecessary.

I've noticed that rehab homes seem to think that patients should be taking some meds even if they weren't prescribed by a patient's regular doctors.

That does sound odd. I'd ask for documents. My LO, who's in MC, has Medicare, but, also Silver Script for medication. They send a medication EOB each month listing the medication, amount, cost, cost paid, etc. She has at least 10 medications and her total charged isn't nearly that much.

She has no prescription insurance. Only Medicare & AARP-neither have a prescription clause.

Sounds high if she has prescription coverage on her insurance. There may be other things in the bill like necessary service, diapers, etc... Request an itemized bill.
