Who pays for assisted living and medical attention/treatments when an individual cannot?

If an elderly couple has some money left, but not enough for more than a year, how does the system help these individuals? Is it , they move to a state run assisted living place, use the senior's remaining money, and then medicaid takes over? Or are they thrown on the street?

In part, the answer depends upon where they live.

Some States have Assisted Living facilities that are paid through Medicaid waiver programs. Others do not.

Much depends upon the elders' impairments. Many nursing homes accept Medicaid as payment, especially after a year or two of private pay.

There are many Medicaid programs which can help elders stay in their homes, if there is some family help.
