Are there any government programs that help retirees afford their mortgage?

My current mortgage payment is $1100 a month. I will be receiving 1700 a month SSI, Without doing a reverse mortgage is there another way to lower my payment? Refinancing is not an option as I refinanced a year ago and have a better rate now than I would with the refi.

Johnsontwin, sorry, I doubt there is any type of Federal or State program that would help a person afford their mortgage. Owning a home is a personal choice.

This suggestion you probably don't want to hear.... time to sell and downsize. If you are having to struggle to pay for your mortgage, you would be struggling even more if there was a major repair that was needed on your home.

This month I had to pay to repair a water leak that was coming through the ceiling. Now I need all new gutters that will be over $1k for replacements. Every day when I go into the kitchen I hope that my 25+ year old refrigerator is still breathing... have you priced refrigerators lately ??? I remember way back when one could buy a new car at those prices :P
