Does anyone know the name of the program in MD that pays you weekly to care for your aging mom?
My mom had dementia, she wants to come stay with me but I'll have to take care of her 24/7. Can I get paid to do this? I won't be able to work if I take her in.
Her, quitting your job to take care of an elderly parent is generally a terrible idea, especially if the parent has dementia. At some point, your mom will require three shifts of young, trained caregivers; you will not be able to get Medicaid to pay for that in your home.
A much better idea is to work with social services to get her the care she needs in HER home and start looking for a facility.
Any program that pays for help for an elder to be cared for at home is a Medicaid based program. Get in touch with your local Medicaid office and inquire about programs that are set up to allow elders to stay in the community. Or call the local Area agency on aging.
If your mother qualifies for Medicaid you might be able to get a small payment. But it will only be for a couple hours of week... not enough to replace the pay of a regular job..not even close.
Most caregivers are not paid. A few have some amount of pay from their own parents pension and savings.
Talk with the local council on aging. They may have some volunteer programs to get a caregiver to come out a couple times a week.
