My 74-year-old sister is deaf and SSDI is her only source of income. She needs financial assistance for plumbing repairs in her home. What is available?
You can try calling the Area Agency on Aging in your city and see if they have any recommendations. Some keep a list of companies that will work with the elderly on home improvement projects and give a discount. You might ask at a Senior Citizens' center to see if anyone there can recommend a local plumber that they have used. Check at your church and see if any member is a plumber who would give a discount to a disabled senior. Be sure to check these recommended plumbers out with the Better Business Bureau to see that they are legit. Be there with her when the plumber comes to do an estimate. Get several estimates and get a written contract for any work. Be there at the house when the plumber does the work. It is hard to find inexpensive home repairs, I know. I was lucky to find a church member who was an exterminator and who sprayed a disabled friend's house for free! There are kind professionals out there.
