What is micro vascular ischemic brain disease?

I found paperwork on my mom that says she has micro vascular ischemic brain disease? What is that? That was in 2009. Could the mood swings and not being Abe to make a decision be from that? I see no follow up paperwork from that ct scan.

onlyacaregiver: those are mini strokes. they have probably done a lot more damage since 2009. Get a repeat study. Yes it will produce anxiety, delusions, mood swings and more. Start checking her bills, too, you may find many unpaid. Been there. Done that.

Microvascular - of or relating to the small/smallest blood vessels
Ischaemic - of or relating to restricted blood supply

This sounds like the precursor to vascular dementia; but in 2009 perhaps your mother wasn't showing any significant symptoms and so the diagnosis wasn't appropriate. Now she is; so take the paperwork and your mother to her PCP and ask for a referral. You may find that there are more recent records with her doctor?

Hugs, and don't panic :) Unfortunately the damage already caused isn't reversible BUT if your mother has underlying disease that hasn't been addressed then it may well be that there will be useful preventive/conservative treatments available to her. And the mood swings they can do a lot for. Best of luck, please update.

I suggest you google it, there are lots of sites.
Briefly, it means there have been lots of TIAs or 'silent strokes". When my mom had an MRI we were told her brain "lit up like a christmas tree" and were hustled off to a neurologist specializing in stroke prevention. No one ever explained what the scan meant and that all those supposedly silent strokes have an impact, until I came to this site I had never heard of Vascular Dementia. I would suggest you start educating yourself about it.
