Can I pay an equity gift back now and use the money to keep mom in assisted living?

When we sold my mothers house we gifted equity to her grandson. I know I will be penalized when applying for Mass Health Can I pay it back now and use the money to keep her in assisted living if so how do I pay it back do I nee a lawyer for this?
