Falling in a memory care facility.

My mom lives in a memory care facility. On 7/11 while getting up early morning hours to use the bathroom she fell on her face resulting in a hard blow to her forehead, fractured a rib and concussion. Mom has vascular dementia so it's been a slow recovery mentally. I see changes in her dementia, not too bad but she's different. Dr ordered a bed alarm so caregivers could get to her before another fall, HOWEVER, this past Wednesday, caregivers neglected to set her alarm and she fell hitting the back of her head. It's been 4 days since her fall and her demeanor has changed. Terribly frightened because now she has no idea where she is and didn't know who I was yesterday. She's gone from a rather independent woman to a terrified woman. I'm so concerned she has changed forever. Will she come out of this or is this my new mom?

Falls happen. My mom fell in Memory Care with two aides in the room. Like your mom, she simply couldn't remember that she was not allowed out of bed without an aide at her side. She broke her hip, which put an end to independent ambulation. In other words, falls are almost inevitable.

I know she has a concussion from first fall. It's all so traumatizing trying to figure it all out. I'm very upset with the negligence and the not setting her of her bed alarm leading to her second fall. So, I'll see how she is today, and then contact her dr. Thank you.

Mom is using her own bed as it's a memory care set up like home. I asked about using a gym mat which is actually in storage under her bed, but director felt it was more of a tripping hazard for her as she uses a walker.

Have the Dr.'s given you any idea if your mom's altered personality is permanent?

I'm so sorry you and your mom are going through this. It must be very difficult to see your mom like this and for her to not recognize you. If she continues to not recognize you then you can be the lady who represents comfort and security to your mom when you visit. Hopefully your mom can begin to associate you with positive emotions.

Linda, have you talked to the doc who is following her dementia about the prognosis for her following this fall

Some facilities lower the bed, or place cushions around the bed. This might be worth a try.
