My mother has a lot of credit card debt. What can I do to get her out of the debt?

She's currently in assisted living and not on Medicaid.

What are moms finances likely to be in the near future?
Is the debt more like mom is on speed dial with QVC & HSN and buying things she will never need but she has the funds to pay the debt and not affect her ability to private pay for AL or a NH for years.....
OR is moms debt & payments affecting her ability to pay her AL?

If there's a POA and if your mom has dementia and if she has the money the POA can call her debtors, explain the situation to them, and see if they'll settle the debts (pay off a percentage and call it good). Beware: once the debtors have the phone number the POA calls from that will be their most recent contact number and they won't hesitate to call it incessantly if your mom is behind on her payments.

First you take her cards away. Expect a big fuss. Do it anyway.

People would need more info to advise you. Does your mom have dementia? Does anyone have poa? A couple basic points: it's her debt, not yours, by no means use your funds to pay this stuff off. Do not talk to collection agencies and do not sign anything to accept personal responsibilty for her debts or current bills.

If she is not able to handle her money do what ever it takes to get the credit cards and checkbook away from her. This is very common. Lots of us have gone through similar situations.
