Assessment available to explain to my dad what options are open to him?

My dad has been at home caring for himself for 3 years now and his health is steadily declining. He can't seem to decide what kind of care he needs, or if he can stay home. My sisters and I are trying to help him cope with decisions but he keeps changing his mind from day to day. Is there an organization that will provide objective assessment for him and help explain his options?

In 2014, there were 618 AAAs serving older adults in virtually every community in the nation. In the few states without a AAA infrastructure?those with small populations or sparsely populated land areas?the state
serves the AAA function.

One of the OAA’s foundational principles is that the programs and services created to help support consumers in their homes and communities are customized to meet their individual needs. There’s nothing one-size-fits-all about AAAs or what they offer their clients!

How to Connect With Your Local AAA All AAAs have local hotlines or websites to provide consumers with information and assistance, so if you know the name of your local AAA, start there. Alternatively, you can find a AAA by zip code via the Eldercare Locator’s website (www.eldercare.gov) or you can speak with an information specialist The Eldercare Locator is a free national service funded by the U.S Administration for Community Living and administered by n4a.

cjbailey, I do not know how much the initial nursing visit/evaluation might cost, but it could be money well spent if you and dad can afford to just private pay it.

Amy is putting you on the right track. I work for the local Area Agency on Aging in my county. I am trained as a "Certified Options Counselor". Call your local Area Agency on Aging and ask who does Options Counseling in your area, it is a good way to gain knowledge on services, programs, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, group homes, meal programs, adult day care, in-home-care programs, respite programs, some may be paid for by a block grant and cost you little to nothing based on need and at risk factors. If your dad has any military background he could be a candidate for Veterans Aid and Attendance.
Hope this helps. lbarnett

Amy you should call your local area agency on aging ask them what you have asked us and they will huide you to someone who can do s health assesment and let dad know what services are best suited to his needs. What state does he live in? Also if dad has not gotten all his paperwork in order, will, power of attorney, healthcare poa and living will you should help him do that right away. I can give you a link to a very good article on the forms all adults need to have and how to get them completed. Just pirvate message me as admin will remove any link that is posted in a thread.

Ambriel, I requested a home healthcare nurse to check my dad for UTI and bedsore. Dr. ordered it, but I was then told that new Medicare laws state they will not pay for home nurse unless patient is seen by doctor within one month of home nurse visit. I cannot get my father to go to doctor so had to cancel home health nurse since Medicare won't cover the visit.

As the doctor to order home healthcare for him and let them come out and do an assessment. Talk to the social worker as well.

Go to the Aging Life Care Professionals website and find a professional in your area. They can help him determine the level of care and walk him through a process to decide.

Get a durable POA (DPOA) while you still can. Get a health care proxy (HCP). Then call a visiting nurse agency if that is what you have in mind. They do an assessment and you will have POA/HCP to coordinate it.
