My husband has been in a nursing home. Can the monthly expenses that went to them be deducted?

The nursing home took all of his Social Security check except for $35. Can this be deducted on our income tax. We reside in CA.

ramiller: That's what Schedule A is itemizing.

You can only take the amount above 10% of your adj gross income as I explained in earlier post and only if you itemize.

Your medical expenses have to be at or above 10% of your gross income in order for it to be claimed on Schedule A.

Yes if your total medical expenses reach 10% or more of your adj gross income then the amout above the 10% is deductible. Example..if your adj gross income is 50,000 than medical expenses that exceed 5000 would be deductible but only if you itemize. If you take the standard deduction then no. You should add all expenses, ins premiums, pres.copays, doc copays, mileage to doc visits, his cost to nursing home. Your tax advisor can help you work it all out.
