My mother has been in a state licensed residential home since 9/21/24. Her cost per month is $7,500. I know she cannot deduct food or housing. However, she is 100 years old and requires help….1. Bathing 2. Dressing3. Toileting4. Administering medication5. Getting to bed and getting upThe caretaker cuts her hair and oversees her teeth brushing. She still feeds herself. What % of her $7,500 would be medical expenses to deduct? Also, what cost ($) would you assign to each in case I have to itemize?

When it gets to this point you will need to consult a CPA. Unfortunately it rises to a very high level to be able to deduct. You already know the basics, that room and board cannot be deducted.

You can look this question up on the IRS website and the website for your own taxes, and A.I. can give you some idea, but if taxes are being filed I would go through a CPA in your area. Whoops, there goes another 500.00, but it is the safest way.

I had a tax accountant prepare my uncles taxes because I had no clue what is proper to claim. It was at a cost but he was able to receive a refund that surpassed the cost.

I suggest you purchase turbo tax If you want to attempt on your own. The software will guide you through the questions based on federal and state regulations.

My mom could deduct a percentage only when she entered memory care and not AL. Custodial care does not count. You will need to check with IRS od a tax accountant

The IRS has information about this. Go to the IRS website, then to "Help"; then to "Frequently asked questions"; then to "Medical, nursing home, special care expenses."
