My Father happily sleeps 20-21 hours per day and lives in a beautiful independent/assisted living facility and they wake him for 3 meals daily.

I'm reading the book 'being mortal' right now, and am trying to fight feeling guilty...that if I were there more engaging him, he'd be 'living' more. Each visit (2-3 times weekly), I actually talk to him about bridge, music, things he used to enjoy doing, and ask if he'd like to still do them...he says no, he wants to sleep. I'm thinking this is normal, and just the cycle he's on...I guess I'm just looking for some confirmation that I shouldn't be doing anything else, and should just let it be. That seems like the nicest thing, instead of trying to deny him the choice to do what he wants at this stage of the game...at 92 years old.

What does his doctor say about that amount of sleeping? It seems excessive.
