My mother has Alzheimer's and is now having difficulty swallowing. What will happen now?

My mother is in a nursing home. They said she is having difficulty swallowing. I know this is part of the disease but I don't know what will happen to her next and how will she it? Is it painful or uncomfortable? Is there anything to ease the difficulty in swallowing?

What is the next stage of Alzheimer's ?

My dad is given soup and yoghurt type of thing, topped up with protein shakes. He doesn't eat much but it seems to be keeping him going.

The nursing home will start to thicken her liquids and perhaps begin to puree her food. This way she will still get her food and fluids and not be at risk for aspiration.
