My Mom doesn't qualify for Medicaid nor have extra money to pay a friend who is willing to care for her. Are there federal funds available?

My mom has Alzheimer's and needs someone to care for her. I have a friend who is willing to do this. Mom makes just a little to much so she doesn't quality for medicaid. As it is, there is barely enough to pay the monthly bills so naturally she can't afford to pay someone to care for her. Are there federal funds out there to help pay a caregiver? She is very close to this person who is willing to care for her and refuses to have anyone else.

If mom's MD writes an order for in home care and mom can't afford it, she should qualify for Medicaid. Call your county office of the aging.

Medicaid is a state program not federal. Even though she does not currently qualify, there is a spendown you can do to qualify. Your best bet is to start the Medicaid spend down process, and at the same time have her doctor recommend a level of care. Medicaid generally does not pay for home care or assisted living, but if she qualifies for a nursing home or a memory care unit according to her doctor, Medicaid does cover those. The sooner you start the application and spend down process the better.
