My elderly parent is not getting up and going to the bathroom. Any advice?

He is in a group home--has all of sudden started this behavior for a week. He is only diagnosed with Major Depression.

tonka, could it be that your father just can't get up quick enough to make it to the bathroom? My Dad ran into that issue and it took awhile for Mom to get him to start using a Depend type garment.

But what was the cause? For my Dad we had to check to see what Mom was feeding him. Even though I told Mom that Dad cannot tolerate dairy products, she thought it was just milk.... iI couldn't convince her it was also the cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream, Redi Whip, shredded cheese, etc. that she was using for meals.

Medicine can also have such a side effect. On the long shot maybe your parent is doing this just to get attention.

They will decide at some point to get him to a hospital if he does not improve. If he is pooping his pants, they may refer him to skilled nursing care. It largely depends on what their facility rules are.
