My Mum sleeps a lot. Is it because she is getting to the end of her time?

She sleeps all night on most nights. Then after breakfast around 8:30 she wants to go back to bed. If I don?t take her back to bed straight away she falls asleep in her chair.
When she gets up again around 10 o"clock she has a coffee and falls asleep again on and off for the rest of the day.

My parents will claim they sleep only 11 pm to 6 a.m. but so many times I have caught them dozing off in the living room. Dad [93] pretty much admitted after breakfast while trying to read the morning newspaper that he will doze up and sleep until he hears Mom [97] call him for lunch.

As we get older we tend to sleep more. I am pushing 70 and on weekends if I am watching a movie or an old TV series, I find myself nodding off.

My mom started doing this over 2 years ago, on good nights she is tucked in bed by 8 and sleeps until I get her up the next morning, then back to bed until noon or 1 o'clock, I think she would sometimes sleep longer if I let her. At first I thought the end was near, now it's just become the 'new normal'.

I have heard of excessive sleepiness being an indicator to call Hospice. I would do that immediately so you can get some support if that this is a sign of progression towards decline.

Tweety I think the only person who can accurately answer your question is your moms doctor. If the answer is yes, they can set you up for hispice services. Take advantage of this program, it is wonderful. God bless

Sleeping 20 or more hours a day can be a sign of the end approaching. But there can be other reasons, too. Have you discussed this with her doctor? Might this be time for a hospice evaluation?
