Why does my husband (82) who has dementia, paces manically up and down the apartment?

It gets scary because I fear he will fall or worse. When it gets too frantic, I have to physically force him to sit down. He doesn't read anymore and sometimes will watch TV or a movie.

Many dementia patients pace that way. It may stop as he progresses with this condition. I think it varies as to how long this behavior last. I don't know of any way to curtail it. Is he anxious or agitated? Have you discussed it with his doctor? You might get his input on it.

Can you ensure that he can't get outside and walk away quickly?

Elissa, this happens often with dementia. Some people will pace for hours on end. The only good advice I've seen is to make sure there are no hazards in the way and to just let them pace. Still, I know that it is nerve wracking for those looking on.
