A ventilator can be used as long as a person has a heartbeat. Some people have even been kept on ventilators after they had no other signs of life other than the heartbeat. Adding O2 and removing CO2 happens during each ventilatory cycle. CO2 is made during metabolism, so there will be CO2 as long as there is life.
