Benita Asked June 2015

Does Alzheimer's have different stages to categorize at what stage your loved one is?

ferris1 Jun 2015
Go to alz.org to find the different stages. Each person is unique though and presents with varying degrees of the symptoms.

It doesnt much matter as they can stay at any stage for any length of time in my opinion. My Mom lives with me and I take care of her. She hasnt walked or talked for over 4 years and I have been using thick it and pureeing her foods that long also. With good care her doc said they go on for many years and die a natural death.

Good information from others. I would say tho that those steps are only a guideline. My husband lost his ability to speak, communicate or write shortly after diagnosis. From having a problem with some words, to nothing at all in about a year.

You can also Google FASt - Functional Assessment Staging specific to Alz & dementias.

7 stages from forgetting to turn off the stove to asking the same question over and over to hallucinations, forgetting one's age, all the way to forgetting how to swallow food and water. Contact http://www.alzheimers.org for more info.
