Is there a way to clean my stepdad while on his back?

My stepdad has fibrosis that hardens the lungs, restricts his breathing if on his side.

Contact your local area agency on aging, ask about in home services. If he can ben his legs, he can bend them while lying on his back you may be able to reach everything that needs cleaning. Washing after every incontinent episode is important and will help to maintain his skin integrity. If he can stand, he can bend over so you can clean his bottom. It's difficult when there is a lack of mobility or breathing issues.

If it is fecal matter, then there is a device that has a long curved plastic spout with a bulb at the end to hold water and one can just squirt it in the rectal area. I have one which acts like a bidet, but I'm sitting on the toilet. Helps when one's shoulders are achy or for whatever restriction. Thank you Veronica for your help.

Ferris I think she is probably thinking about cleaning fecal matter.

My husband has pulmonary fibrosis and there should be no restriction to cleaning any part of his body. You are not specific enough, but why isn't he cleaning his body himself? If you are referring to he gets short of breath quickly, then take longer to get clean. Being clean is over-rated. We have healthy bacteria on our skin that actually protects us. Do all you can to not expose him to unhealthy situations where he could get pneumonia.

Can u afford an aide just to bathe him? They r more experienced in something like this. Check with Office of the aging and his insurance. U may get one for nothing. Is he seen by a homecare agency? If so, see if they provide aides.

I imagine he can't lie flat either which further complicates the problem. Are you doing it alone? is he heavy? Can he help at all? I am assuming you have a hospital bed and possibly an overhead trapize. if he can bend his knees up and have him pull his butt up off the bed so you can quickly clean underneath. if he has oxygen turn it up before you start and return to regular setting a few minutes after you finish. Have a bowl of warm soapy water and good quality non disintigrating paper towels ready before you start. do as much as you can from the front before you start moving him. I usually recommend preserving modesty but in this case getting him clean is more important. just don't expose him more than necessary. If the poop is up his back having him lean forward over an overbed table may be less distressing too
