4Grandys Asked February 2015

My 85 year old elder is now constipated daily. What's happening?

I have been giving her Correctol every couple of days to get her to go.

Thanks for the answers. I think I'll get a fiber supplement and some prune juice. She's only on one med. and Vitamin D.

Could be medications or diet that are causing it, so if you want to try to determine the source, investigate all the medications first. Then look at the diet to see if the foods being consumed are compounding or actually causing the problem. Try an old fashioned stool softener for a few weeks and see if that works. It did for my mom. Correctol did absolutely nothing for her and fiber supplements, which she had been taking her entire life, didn't help either. Prune juice and stewed apples didn't really work well.

Maybe not enough fiber in her diet, and/or she's not walking enough [if she's able]. My Dad has this issue and he finds that prune juice works for him.
