I suspect the person I'm caring for is being abused by a family member. What is the next thing to do?

If yuu are a caretaker, be prepared for the family member to accuse you of the abuse!

Good luck - I've been waiting for APS to act for a long time and nothing ever seems to happen. If you have real evidence, go to the police station and report the abuse and ask them to make a welfare check. If they find things are as you say they are, they will take the abused person into protective custody and the court will intervene. Keep in mind that you will need real evidence -- photos, medical records, other documentation, financial records, etc. Those can be extremely difficult to get. Hearsay will be ignored. There has to be some real cause for action or none of this will work. You can also try taking the abused person to an emergency room, demand social services intervene, and let them take it from there. That's about all you can do, and both options are extreme and not be taken without due consideration to the impact they can have on the people involved, so make sure you have your facts right and know what you are doing, before you do it.

If you see evidence of abuse, snap a picture with your cell phone. Bruises, cuts, hand marks, whatever. Send that to APS.
