Jocelyne Asked February 2015

Mom's family doctor has been great, but would it be wise to find a Geriatric Dr?

Right now, 93 yr Mom has "minimal" signs of dementia.

Jocelyne, I would think since your Mom's family doctor has gotten her to the age of 93, which is great, I wouldn't change doctors. If there is something that the doctor feels needs a specialty doctor [such as for dementia], then let the family doctor do the referring.

I asked my care receivers doctor to refer us to a nurse specializes in geriatrics. We were put in touch with one in network that had all the experience and knowledge to not only counsel us and tell us what resources were available, but helped arrange in network specialists for the care receiver. Wish I would have known to do this sooner... as one of the neurologists she saw put her on a low dose med that has positive signs of slowing the decline of dementia. Another provided a low dose of anti-depressant to keep her anxiety in check. These 3 additional folks are now active members of team grandma along with her primary care doctor. It truly takes a village. ;)
