I just put my husband in a nursing home in Massachusetts. Any advice?

He has dementia Atzheimer's and diabetes. Have elder lawyer he now has mass health under Medicaid. I lease a car and rent an apt. We have nothing in bank. He spent his whole retirement monies gambling..question is I paid with his pension $500 medicaid wants $900 for bhai..how can I get that down so they won't eventually take my $15,000 life ins policy I have for burial? There is no other funds at all.

Medicaid is an absolutely awesome and necessary program for single elders. It is more complicated and (in my opinion) less equitable for married couples. It is what it is and your only recourse, really, is to have the assistance of an experienced elder law attorney while going through the hoops.

stefani, I have some idea of how extremely challenging and emotionally draining it is to see a spouse declining with dementia. On top of struggling with those conflicting and heart-breaking decisions to have to also face financial difficulties is overwhelming. My heart goes out to you. Hugs and well wishes to you.

stefani, this is a hard one for you. Medicaid has a formula they use about division of resources so that the spouse is not impoverished. Your rent, however, takes such a large amount of your resources. I imagine in MA that such rents are common. Have you considered looking to see if there is subsidized housing for seniors in the area? If Medicaid is not flexible beyond what they have left you, finding a less expensive place to live would be helpful. I don't know how things are in MA. Out in TX we had wonderful subsidized housing communities for seniors. The seniors that had less income paid very little rent out of their own pocket. It helped them a lot.

And by law they cannot kick out a senior on disability...particularly one who happens to be on Medicaid. Its illegal. Again get a new attorney.

Divorce? $15, 000 is very little. Not worth the stress. Ie average burial is $10, 000 plus and taxes?
Let go and move on...ie you were married to a narristic addict who most likely treated you poorly. Divorce?

What is bhai?

Do you have income other than your husband's pension? Are you on social security?

I don't think medicaid will go after a burial insurance policy although they might go after a usual life insurance policy.
