What benefits are available for a disabled veteran?

My husband has served in the USArmy for just under 6 years during 1982-1987, and recently had to retire from full time job with St. Mary's County Board of Education due to terminal illness. We are really struggling with bills. He has a pension coming but the majority goes to continue his health benefit premiums. He is only 58. We have submitting application to also claim his Social Security disability, but that may take months before approved, and then that's only if approved. I need to know if he is eligible for any benefits/assistance with financial, housing, electrics, etc.
