My elderly friend gets letters from sweepstakes saying he had won 1 M, cars, etc. How can these scams be stopped?

They ask for $20. We cannot get him to stop sending the money - I'm sure that he has sent over $500. We would like to report these companies but don't know where to start. He only has a very small pension to live on and he also has two dogs to feed. We just feel so helpless because he just doesn't understand this is a scam. Where can we begin?

It will be almost impossible to stop these scams from mailing to your friend's house as he has already answered some, thus he's is now on a mailing list for other scammers.

Only thing someone can do is set up a Post Office Box for this elderly friend, and have all his mailed redirected to the PO Box... that way, whomever picks up the mail can toss all the junk mail.

You file a mail fraud complaint with his post office.
