My friends husband just had a stroke. How does she get his name off her house before he goes into a nursing home?

As others have said, she needs to see an elder law attorney & asap.
Doing anything rash, like changing property ownership now, will totally be a problem if he needs to apply for Medicaid.

Keep in mind that all real property (cars, homes, land) is totally documented in your local courthouse and the records all dovetailed to the state. If he applies for Medicaid, the change in ownership will be discovered in just a few keystrokes.

What Jeanne and Maggie said is correct. She needs an elder law attorney.

By the way, for Medicaid purposes, all assets of either spouse are considered, so removing his name from the house may not accomplish much. Definitely urge a legal consultation.

I agree with Maggie. What she needs is legal advice, from a specialist in Elder Law, to protect what assets they can in the event of needing Medicaid.

That's not the right thing to do. Have your friend make a fast appointment with an elder care attorney. He'll undoubtedly go to rehab after his stroke. If he's on Medicare and has a supplement, his rehab will be most likely 100% covered. She needs legal advice. Now.
