How do I respond to my husband (83) with dementia who is obsessed with talking about sex?

He has been impotent for over 10 years. He has just recently started wanting to have sex and I know he cannot. He is obsessed with it and it is driving me crazy. He is in poor health, has very poor hygiene and can hardly walk.

I've read that with decreasing brain function, the inhibitions go away and there can be a fixation on sex talk, groping, grabbing, etc. I agree with Pam - talk to the doctor ASAP, and every time something changes that is causing a problem or worrying you.

Medication may be the reason. Some patients who take SSRI meds in combination with Aricept experience renewed sex drive. Aricept help conserve acetylcholine in the brain and enhance brain functions, including the sexual arousal mechanisms. His MD can adjust his medications.
