Concerned4MyMom Asked July 2014

Is there financial compensation for being a caregiver to a senior family member in Chicago, Illinois?

My mom went through cancer treatment and is suffering from the side affects. She also has to take blood thinners for a heart condition. She fell a couple days ago and was bleeding on her elbow. She hit her elbow while I was out doing grocery shopping the following day and she bled enough that I am worried about her falling again and more. I am currently unemployed and cannot afford in home care. I would like to be my mom's caregiver at all times. Money is a problem. What programs are available and what information will I need to provide? Are there certifications that I can complete?

Ask the MD if a stay in rehab would be safer and more productive. They can draw blood daily and adjust the meds, add in PT and OT. He could also order visiting nurses or aides, and be sure her insurance will cover it. If you are unemployed and she is on SS, apply for Medicaid.
