Grandfather (96) is going crazy with dementia. Any advice?

I'm 22 taking care of my grandfather, I'm use to it my dads out fishing. Anyway my grandfather finally came back home from his daughters place since Easter, they're bad. They take his money and he doesn't care asking as he gets a drink they won't tell him they keep pretty much most of it. My dads brother tried killing him with a huge kitchen knife, 9 holes on the door the cop said if he held the door closed with his back he'd be dead, the dude got off with I think a misdemeanour. Pretty well nothing. It's cause my dad moved back home and had my grandfathers debut card cancelled so they're all mad at him and us. They can only get money if they bring him to bank. But I can't do much cause it will be really bad and my grandpa wants us all to be together which won't happen. Anyway I got him back yesterday, today he's been acting weird, he's deaf and blind but he said he sees people in his room, ei: a bartender this morning, and said he thought he was in town and not home. Now he sees a bunch of people all around him just standing there and not talking, he's drinking but he's never acted like this drinking. I have nurses coming over Monday but anything I can do to get his brain back to normal? I'm not sure if they always have him his pills but the pills are just Tylenol and depression pills. But I've never seen him like this, my dad has when he got him back before too.

He seems to be back to normal now, he's been home for 4 days now, unsure if they were'nt giving him his pills or what why he was like there the first 2 days but hes back to normal thankfully, thanks for the answers :)

It could be a form of alcohol dementia. Is he better or worse after having a drink ? after two drinks?

You're welcome! I hope all went well for you and your grandpa. My grandmother had a few hallucinations as well where she would start yelling at the TV because she thought that the actors on certain programmes were talking to her. It scared her more than anything so I stopped her from watching TV for a while. I know it can be scary at times but just keeping your grandpa comfortable and trusting your gut instincts is more than enough to get you through. You're doing a great job!

That was a helpful response actually, thanks. As far as I know he has no way of hurting him self, I walk him to the front room/bathroom and my father put a home made door (big piece of wood) just before the stairs start, so it's impossible for him to fall down the stairs, I can surely wait till Monday I just wanted more incite just in case it's bad and I never knew so, thanks again!

From what you're saying, it seems like he's having hallucinations? Is there any chance you can get your grandpa to a doctor in the mean time? Is he at danger of falling or hurting himself in any other way? If he's not self harming then your best bet is to just go along with what he is saying or seeing. By entertaining the hallucinations, you will keep him calm and yourself as well. Just keep talking to him. It may not be the answer you want but the key is to keeping him comfortable, at least until Monday.
