mondos1angel Asked June 2014

Dad (70) previously had a stroke. He shut himself in his room, refuses to eat or drink, hasn't bathed in months. Advice?

He has no sense of hygiene, he has not bathed in several months. he has hardly been eating much anyway and for the last day has refused anything. I am in fear he will starve or dehydrate. for the last six months or more he chooses to only sit in his room and chain smoke. He know wants nothing to do with anyone even his dogs. I want to know what I can do? I think he needs professional help, but he wont go willingly.

mondos1angel, maybe it is your Dad's way of telling everyone that enough is enough.... time for him to go to the next chapter of his life. Does his family doctor know he's acting this way? Give the doctor a call.

Please call the Albuquerque NM Senior hotline at (505) 764-6400 as soon as possible, because if he dies, the police may charge you with negligent homicide. So sorry you have to do this. Even 911 can help you.

At the rate he is going, you may need to call an ambulance for him, and once he is in the ER you can refuse to take him home until he has a complete workup. It sounds like he may have severe depression or other mental illness.

You are right. He needs professional help.
