I want to bring my Mom who is Canadian to live in a long term care nursing home in the US. Will canada pay for her care in the US?

My mom is a canadian citizen and i live in Bixford, Ma. I want to bring her close to me to live in a long term care nursing home. Will canada continue to cover her for medical insurance?

Hi Alicedaughter, I can't speak for the US health care system but I work in the system as a health care manager here in Canada. I know that long term care is funded provincially not federaly (although federal dollars to off set costs) and if your mother is not a resident in the province which she holds her health card they will not pay for long term care outside of the province, even within Canada. Here in Manitoba long term care is based on income, I am not sure about payment in the province she lives in or the state you are bringing her to. If she has private insurance the carrier of that insurance might pay for some private care or subsidize long term care no matter where she is but again that depends on the policy she holds.
