Can we request to see evidence that someone holds healthcare proxy and POA over our only aunt?

Our only aunt lives in america / we aare her only next of kin but our cousins say that they have a piece of paper to say they are her health and POA.can we look for proof. my aunt was in hospital for 3 weeks and now gone into care / cousins said she is mentally incapable and has slight dementia . they gave up her apartment unknown to her. can they do that. I have spoken to my aunt by telephone and she is very with it. Told me she was looking forward to going back too her apartment .. and I feel a great injustice has been done too her any help or advice greatly appreciated

Your cousins would be next of kin. You are a niece/nephew. The cousins are adult children of your aunt.

My mother has moderate dementia and sounds quite "with it" on the phone for brief periods of time; this does not mean that she can live indendently any longer. You are quite distant from the actual caregiving; are you suspicious of the folks "on the gound?"

Do you know what hospital she was in? You could call records at the hospital and ask if they have a POA on file.
