How do you place a non-relative in a nursing home that is blind and unsafe at home?

I have an elderly friend who is blind and cannot take of himself. How do you place someone who is not related ins nursing home? I don't have a POA and he's been a family friend for years I don't know what to do with him , he may resist going but he cannot take care of himself . Any ideas would be helpful and thank you in advance

Well, you can communicate TO the doctor if you want, and if you accompany someone to a doctor visit and if its OK with the patient the doc can talk to you with them. Otherwise it takes a HIPAA release form, but it does not have to be a POA necessarily.

Does this man have any family at all? If so they should be contacted. If not and you want to take responsibility for him you'll have to get POA before doing anything. His Dr. won't even talk to you about him without POA.

The other thought is rehab for low vision - there are home study and residential programs out there, if someone is cognitively good enough they can learn to be safer and more independent, and to function more like someone who has always had the vision problem.

Going to primary provider is a start in that their assessment and need for placement will definitely give directions.
