What is a recommended antidepressant for an elderly person?

My mom has been suffering from the after effects of shingles (nerve pain). She is understandably depressed. I think she would benefit from an anti-depressant, but her PCP is reluctant. He says the elderly are very sensitive to anti-depressants.

Elderly people can be very sensitive to many medications including antidepressants. I can't understand why her PCP is reluctant though. Most of my elderly patients are on an antidepressant as was my dad. This is where you need to advocate for your mom. Ask questions and don't stop asking until you are satisfied with the answers. Dr.'s may be reluctant to use an antidepressant as their first line of treatment but if this is the case what else is the PCP suggesting for your mom's depression, if anything?
