Husband has bruised rib cage. Any advice?

He has to cough, or he will end up getting pneumonia. Coughing is VERY PAINFUL, therefore he tries not to cough. His bruised ribs may take weeks to heal. He fell in his walker and bruised his rib cage on the right side. He hugs a pillow and coughs anyway as easily as he can stand it. It is hard to be in a position where I can't do anything. I help him in all ways I can, but when he coughs and hurts, I feel helpless. I know it isn't about me, but I do love him.I have learned alot on this web site and this forum is great.

We sent copies of all the findings in the ER to the PCP, heart dr., pulmanologist. So thanks again for the input. Love this forum!

You may also want to get a referal to a Pulmonologist to be on the safe side. They specialize in the area of respiratory conditions.

Yes, they did x-rays and everything. I will get him in to see his PCP just in case. Thanks for the advice. Better to be safe than sorry. I hate to see him hurt when he coughs. That is why they gave him painkillers, because they saw no infection, no breakage, just rib contusion.

fanci - my sig other broke a couple of ribs a few weeks ago. It was extremely painful to cough, but necessary. Has your husband been seen by a doctor? The only thing they could do for sig other was give him painkillers which then allowed him to cough easier. Now a couple of weeks later he is getting better. He was X rayed but they found nothing but the broken ribs. It is good to establish if there is an infection setting in or not, otherwise all they can do it give him painkillers. I know it is hard to watch them in pain. ((((((((hugs))))))

Fancicoffee7 - I am 55, and I have been stupid enough to get pneumonia twice. Trust me, listen to others and get him to a doctor ASAP, and make sure they do BOTH an X-Ray and a CT-SCAN. The X-Ray didn't pick up my pneumonia the first time as it was on the back side of my lungs.

See the MD ASAP. This is more than bruised ribs. See answers to your same question posted earlier.
