Mom put $300 as a deposit on a retirement apartment but moved in elsewhere, and now getting run around getting her deposit back. What can we do?

She put the $ down, end of May, and has made numerous calls to two staff, and yesterday, the executive director..."we sent it 2 weeks ago...call the Post office...and lying about Mom's calls, as if she doesn't remember the prior conversations....The site is Waltonwood, Lakeside, Sterling Hts., MI, and I know that Singh company runs it...do you know an address for Singh to submit these complaints and get her $300 deposit back, which they said would not be a problem if she decided to move in elsewhere, which she did. Thanks! My Mom was so stressed yesterday, and she said she argued with them for 20 min., then they ended the conversation by saying, check the post office...must be there, then they hung up. This is unacceptable and I want to keep pursuing the matter!!

A verbal contract is not as good as a written contract. Did your mother sign anything when she made a deposit on this place? Hopefully she has something in writing stating a full refund on her deposit in case she changes her mind. Whoever told her she could get her deporit back may not have been in compliant with the corporate rules.

In writing, ask them for a copy of the cancelled check that they allege they sent. Tell them your next step is the court of public opinion. Letters to the editor of local papers; Better business bureau; etc

Write a letter (important for tracking) or send an email directly to the Director of Operations, Steven Tyshka, and also copy Carl Slemer, Controller. Request them to send the check via certified mail ONLY. Have them cancel prior check (if actually sent!!).

Also, give an online review on yelp, after it is all over. Be sure to let the two mentioned above that you will use social media to expose their poor customer service practices.
