Mom's having a brain shunt put in to offset NPH anyone have any experience with this?

My mother 83 with trouble walking, getting food to her mouth, incontinence, and dementia is scheduled to have a shunt put in. I pray for improvement as it really is getting to be too much for me. I recently had shoulder surgery and I know helping her in her wheel chair, with the walker, getting in and out of the car are hurting my shoulder. I am the only caregiver as my siblings are out of state. I have been very impatient this last week, tired, need a break its been 24/7 and it is getting harder by the minute!

We have not dealt with shunt placement; Mother has too many health problems to be considered Here is a link to the National NPH group. There is a wealth of information (as limited as it is) and a very sharing group of people on their forum. Info on forum is at the bottom of the page. patsabin Best wishes!

Sosandi, I don't have any experience with NPH. I am writing to let you know that I read your post & am praying for your mom & you. I hope others who have dealt with the situation you & your mom are facing do respond to your request.

The only experience I have has to do with the shunt, and not with NPH. When my oldest son was two years old, he had astrocytoma carcinoma, and this required surgery for the removal of the tumor. During his recovery, he had to have a shunt for about 10 days, as the surgery, itself, I suppose, may have caused some swelling. It seemed pretty painless to him, but it was hard to keep a 2 year old down, and keep him still enough to not disturb the drain. He wasn't even given anything for pain, as they needed to be able to access his vitals properly.
