Will Medicaid pay for bills from hospital, ambulance, etc. prior to the application?

Medicaid applied for Jan. 8, 2013. Later received bills for hospital, etc. services rendered in August, September and November 2012. Since the draw-down of her funds, she doesn't have the money to pay these. Will Medicaid pay for them since the bills were received after the application?

EXPERT K. Gabriel Heiser Apr 2013
Medicaid won't pay those bills directly, but the Medicaid recipient will be able to deduct the bills from their monthly income. Medical and remedial care expenses that are not subject to being repaid by an outside organization (such as a health insurance program) may also be deducted from the nursing home resident’s income before paying the balance to the nursing home each month.

Not sure since Medicaid rules governed by each state. I do know they ask on the application if you have any unpaid medical bills. My mom did not so can't answer if they would have paid them. We live in Pa

I am afraid they won't. She only qualifies for bills for services rendered after she is approved for Medicaid. She could file for bankruptcy to clear up those bills. If left unpaid, the hospitals and providers will likely sue. I have seen hospitals sue for bills as small as $200.

You need to call her medicaid worker and ask if you can file for 3 months retro benefits as here in California you can get medicaid for up to 3 months prior which if your application date was January 3013 you could apply for Oct, Nov and Dec 2012. Sad but you could not get anything for August but as the expert stated you could used the amounts paid on this bill towards any monthly Share of Cost you might have. Some states have this RETRO benefits and some don't. Good Luck to you!

I'm getting ahead of myself in years. Year should have read 2013.
