mkelsmom Asked April 2013

Can I take any deductions or credits for caring for my mother, even though she is not a dependent?

mkelsmom Apr 2013
My mother pays for home care, groceries, bills, etc out of her pocket. But I act as care giver at night and on the weekends. I travel an extra 50 miles a day. Any tax credits or breaks?

I corrected myself on your mother as a dependent on the other question you asked. It is good to learn these new things.

Not on your own tax return. It probably won't pay to itemize on her return, because she will probably have no tax liability already. The best thing to do in the future is to pay for as much of her care as possible out of her SS check, maybe even having her pay some toward household expenses. It will give her a chance to feel she is contributing, which is important to most people.
